Our souls want to expand and release, yet we cling and hold on–afraid to let go. We feel this part of us wanting to slip away and we cling. We resist. What will be there if this thing is no longer present? We’ve gotten used to its presence. What will keep us company if it is gone?

While our natural instinct is to resist, much like a child clinging as a toy is being taken from its grip, hanging on and clinging is counter to our soul’s desire. And that is what leads to illness, pain and discomfort.

Most recently, my stomach was unsettled for a few days. I felt bad after eating, even though I was starving. Yes, it could have been the flu, digestive imbalance or a myriad of other “causes”. But, I wanted to go deeper. There was a reason for this imbalance and a message in this discomfort. I sensed that I was resisting. I could feel the grip in my stomach, as if something was trying to come out and the rest of me was saying “no.”

In the emotional body, the stomach chakra is responsible for the digestion of emotions. I started examining my stomach from this perspective. Even though my instinct was to resist, I kept focusing on allowing what I was restricting to surface to be released. What was I clinging to? What part of me was trying to be released as I was striving to expand?

Let’s just say the depth and breadth of this experience is hard to put into words. When I was able to step back from the discomfort and see what was really trying to occur, I was able to allow the release and let go. Instead of blocking, suppressing and restricting, I was allowing it to flow through.

Part of expanding and evolving in life means there will be ups and downs. We can slip into a downer mood without realizing why and what is going on. It is the resistance that keeps us there and amplifies the discomfort even more. It is the resistance that blocks the transformation and expansion, keeping us stuck, leading to illness and pain.

How do we stop resisting? It all starts with awareness. Noticing where we are, being aware of our physical cues and signs and stepping out of the emotional loop to see what is really going on. Not getting caught up in the symptoms but recognizing the cause. Once we become aware, we can focus on allowing the release to flow. We can start letting go. And to start letting go, we must recognize that this blockage no longer works for us and we no longer want it. We detach our energy from it and allow this part of us to expand to the higher vibration we are desperately seeking. It takes awareness and it takes practice.

Try not to get discouraged. It’s difficult not to get sucked into the funnel of emotional garbage. We’re often in it before we know it. Start recognizing the funnel and start noticing the signs, then we can start coming out of it. And the more we start paying attention, the sooner we’ll notice the process and the sooner we can stop resisting and start letting go. And that’s when we expand and become more free. That’s when we allow flow.
