I just had an amazing reminder of flow at Mullet Bay, St. Maarten. It took me a bit to feel comfortable with it. My not-so-confident-in-my-swimming-abilities-self loves to keep her feet on the ground. And these waves made it difficult. I fought to stay in contact with the ocean floor. I wanted control and felt vulnerable.

At one point Richie said, “Just let go and enjoy.” So I did. And was grateful for the reminder.
These waves didn’t tumble like other places. There was a small break at shore. But most of the time the rolling waves would come in and go out. As I surrendered to the motion, I would be carried closer to shore and then out. Fighting it robbed me of the experience. Surrendering created a peaceful, almost magical moment. One I truly did not want to end.
The rhythmic motion. The certainty. I wasn’t pulled out into the ocean or beaten up by waves. I was nurtured, supported and caressed. It was soothing and relaxing.

The perfect example of flow.

Remember that your feet may be off the ground at times but the ground is still there.

When we are in our natural rhythm and flow, we may experience wavelike motions. There may be times we are off the path a bit. This does not mean we will stay off the path. We may not even be far off the path, though it may feel like it. In Mullet Bay I knew that my feet would not always touch the ground, but there would come a time when they would. Accepting that freed me to enjoy the experience.

When you are in your natural flow don’t fight it. Know that you will return to where you want to be.

Being out of our natural flow, leaving our path, being separated from where we want to be, can generate fear and intense anxiety. That’s often when we freak out. We do everything we can to get back on our path and where we think we should be. We start fighting and thrashing around.

Energetically this separates us even further.

Surrendering and allowing ourselves to be carried with the flow is much more fun. And more effective.

Allow the waves of life to carry you as they will. When it’s time to stand and move to shore or a different space, do so. Flow with the movement. Try not to resist.

Use the waves as an example of how it should feel. Feeling stress and tension lets you know you are resisting and fighting. Relaxing and BEing lets you know you are flowing. Become aware of the presence within your own body.

Let yourself get used to the natural flow and rhythm.

Surrender. And let go. Flow.

Do you know your natural flow and rhythm of life?

We all have one.
